Handfasting is a Pagan custom in which both the bride and groom bind their hands together with twine or silk for the duration of the vows.
The Ring of Stones originated with the ancient Druids, this tradition has the couple make their vows inside a heart-shaped ring of stones and symbolizes a solid union of love.
Honoring the Four Directions originated with the Druids. It symbolizes the union of the great forces. After speaking their vows the couple faces:
The South, hands unbound, and are asked by the Officiant, "Will your love survive the harsh fires of change?" They answer, "it will". Officiant, "Then accept this blessing of
FIRE. May your home be filled with warmth.
To the West. Officiant, "Will your love survive the ebb and flow of feeling?" Couple, "it will". Officiant, "Then accept the blessing of WATER. May your life together be filled
with love.
To the North. Officiant, "Will your love survive the times of stillness and restriction?" Couple, "it will". Officiant, "Then accept the blessing of EARTH. May your union be
strong and fruitful.
To the East. Officiant, "Will your love survive the clear light of day?" Couple, "it will". Officiant, "Then accept the blessing of AIR. May your marriage be blessed by the light
of every new dawn. Let the spirits of the four directions be thanked for their blessings. May the warmth and the light of your union be blessed. So seal your promise with a kiss."
