Regency Period

The Regency Period began in the early 19th century and was a time of great change.  Following the American Revolution, fashion followed suite with the Industrial Revolution as cotton fabrics became the first major product made in Britain.

Classical Greek and Roman images were evoked with slim, high-wasted gowns, known as the "Empire" style, accompanied by shawls and gloves as arm coverings. Flat shoes, like ballet pumps, were worn.

Change was taking place in extreme measures as the century sees ladies in high standing in cropped hair for the first time.

Napoleon's invasion of Spain in 1808 marked the beginning of the French Revolution.  Napoleon's wife Josephine loved to tend her

gardens in Malmaison.  It was not uncommon to see her amongst her favorite blooms of tulips, dahlias, roses and hydrangea.
